Why This Project Is Important

For a second year, the Keweenaw Science and Engineering Festival (KSEF) is filled with family-friendly interactive and educational events for all ages. This four day festival is scheduled for August 3-6, 2016 and includes an art show, Engineering Day, Science Pub Crawl, Nerd/Teen Night, Michigan Tech Mind Trekkers, MSU Science Theatre a community STEM showcase and more! In order to make this all happen, we need your support!

Project Description

Out of 100 Michigan 9th grade students, 73 will graduate from high school on time; 45 will enroll in post-secondary education within 12 months of graduation; 32 persist from their 1st year to their second year of college; and 18 will graduate with a degree within 6 years. So how do we change this fact?

The 2015 Keweenaw Science and Engineering Festival attracted around 2,000 attendees of all ages; kids, parents and grandparents, as they experienced the WOW of science, technology, engineering and math through hands-on activities, informative talks, stories and other fun events led by scientists, doctors, and engineers. Through interactive demonstrations we can bridge the growing “attraction gap” that students develop towards STEM fields. Informal STEM learning programs have proven a significant learning resource for hands-on, project-based learning that augments formal education experiences. To address this “attraction gap” the festival provided a breadth of high-impact, hands-on activities aimed at introducing participants to meaningful STEM applications used daily in local businesses.

We invited everyone to discover with us and the event attracted families from Michigan and 14 other states. Here are some highlights of what is planned for the 2016 festival:

  • Nerd Night - for teens
  • MSU Science Theatre
  • Science Cafe's - Science Crawl with area restaurants
  • Family Engineering Day
  • Michigan Tech Mind Trekkers at Kestner Park
  • Science in Sports & Health Expo
  • Art Show Exhibit

This festival needs your support. Individual donations and business sponsorships are needed to celebrate science and engineering and bring a festival environment to family learning and fun.
