Graduate Student Conference Award
Why This Project Is Important
The "Graduate Student Conference Award" project is a collaborative initiative between the Graduate School and the Graduate Student Government to foster, encourage, and recognize graduate research. Professional and scholarly conferences are key avenues for presenting one’s research out to the larger community. In addition to sharing knowledge and learning more about the work done by fellow researchers, such conferences also play a key role in graduate students’ professional development.
Presentation, the ability to communicate technical information in a manner which is understandable by a broader audience are key skills required by all, be it industry, R&D labs, or academia. Furthermore, conferences also provide networking opportunities for students - another very critical aspect of grad life given Michigan Technological University's (Michigan Tech) geographical location. Their learnings from presenting in conferences shall give graduate students the confidence to apply the same in other various aspects of not just their professional careers, but also their daily lives. It goes without saying that Michigan Tech also benefits from the visibility provided by the students’ research presentations. The "Graduate Student Conference Award" shall help enrolled graduate students and assist with the costs associated with presenting at conferences.
Project Description
The Graduate Student Government (GSG) is on a mission to provide greater support for graduate students to present at conferences during their time at Michigan Tech. This campaign involves assisting students to offset several costs associated with presenting at conferences. Some of the expenses, such as conference registration fees, travel to/from Michigan Tech (given our unique geographical location), etc., can become a hindrance for graduate students. In recognition of the research done and its subsequent presentation at a conference, the current campaign aims at rewarding students through the "Graduate Student Conference Award" project, which would help them cover several other expenses.
Statements by past recipients of the GSG conference travel support program, “I attended and presented at ASME’s IMECE-2016 for research in Falling Film Heat Exchangers. Being an unsupported MS student, the GSG travel grant was of a big help! The financial support that I received eased the burden of presenting at the conference. I had a great experience presenting at the conference for the very first time, meeting people and understanding first hand how research, although across different domains, is so similar. I truly am grateful to the GSG & the Grad school for all their help." - Apurva Baruah, PhD student, Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics, Michigan Technological University.
